What is the function of verb in a sentence?

The Role of Verbs and the Predicate in a Sentence

Verbs play a very important role in a sentence, along with nouns or pronouns that function as the subject. They act as the root of the predicate.

What is the predicate?

The predicate is the part of the sentence or clause that contains a verb and states something about the subject. Usually, anything that follows the subject in a sentence is part of the predicate.

Example:

"Linda walked home."

The predicate here is 'walked home'. It contains the verb walked and tells us something about the subject (Linda) — that she walked home or did the action of walking toward home.

More examples:

"Travis passed the exam."

"We bought ice cream yesterday."

"She teaches at a university nearby."

NOTE: A predicate requires at least one finite verb to be complete.
