Pronoun as Subject

In grammar, the subject is the one doing or manipulating the verb in the sentence. Pronouns as the subject means that they are the one controlling or manipulating the sentence. They often appear at the beginning of the sentence or clause.


example:


"He drives home."

What/who is the sentence about? him.

 'he' is the subject. Whoever that person is, it reveals that the person is a male. Typically, one will know who this person is because the name will be mentioned in the previous sentence. The name could even appear in the same sentence.


For example:


"Olly watched the game. He is very happy."


or


"Olly watched the game, and he is very happy."



In the sentence “He is very happy.”, one can tell that 'he' refers to “Olly” because his name appeared in the first sentence or previous clause. The pronoun 'he' is used as a substitute for 'Olly'.



More examples:


"They submitted their papers on time."


"It will not last for years."


"She is attending the party."


"He takes good pictures."
